Construction Science (CONS) B.S.


The construction technologist is a person whose career activities are directed toward  the application of engineering, management, and scientific principles. The construction managers performs functions of an engineering and management nature and is an implementor in the translation of technology aspects into functional systems during the construction process. Having the ability to diversify and perform many functions of the construction industry provides the construction manager the unique opportunity to become a part of the residential or commercial building process.

Construction managers work in close support of engineers and architects translating conceptual ideas into functioning systems and provide the supervisory direction for the implementation of these concepts by technicians and draft persons. The construction manager is principally an implementor of the technical aspects of projects or systems. This implementation may be manifest in the written and graphical aspects of project documentation, in the design of standard systems, or in the overseeing of the various construction processes and activities.

Program competencies include: estimating; surveying; architectural design/drafting; use of CAD and construction software; understanding of materials, soils, foundations, structures, utilities, specifications, and building codes; and construction management.

Graduates are prepared to become a member of the engineer-architect-contractor team in the design-construction effort. Career opportunities include: superintendent, facilities management, estimator, inspector, specification writer, manufacturer’s representative, project manager, residential contractor, and purchasing agent.
